A mock-up, not a client screenshot. The figures are fictional and rounded. What is real is the layout we apply: the figure that decides, top left, with its variance to budget, the trend beside it, the detail below, and a single accent colour placed on the value that calls for a decision.

The method

Five questions to judge a Power BI expert

They concern the decisions that cost dearly when taken badly, and they can be asked without being a technician. We answer them publicly.
  1. Where do you put a shared rule?

In the model, written once. A rule copied into every report produces figures that diverge at the first change.

  2. How do you handle dates?

A dedicated date table, marked as such, covering the whole history. It is the quickest test: without it, year-on-year comparisons will be wrong.

  3. A report takes thirty seconds to open. What do you do?

We look at the model before the report: unused columns, bidirectional relationships, measures that recalculate. The visual is rarely the culprit.

  4. How do you hand the report over?

Training included, readable naming conventions, documentation of the model. Your teams must be able to modify a report without calling us back.

  5. And if I only need one report?

Then we build one report. Three to ten days, and that is perfectly fine. A consultant who answers "you need a platform" is answering the quote.

Frequently asked

What people ask before entrusting us with a project

How do you recognise a good Power BI consultant?

Ask them five questions. Where would they place a calculation rule shared by several reports: the right answer is "in the model, once". How do they handle a date table. What do they do when a report takes thirty seconds to open. How do they hand the report over to your teams. And what would they do if you only needed a single report. A consultant who answers all five precisely knows the trade; one who answers with a sales pitch will sell you a bigger project.

What skills should a Power BI expert master?

Three layers, and the third makes the difference. Power Query and the M language to prepare the data. Star-schema modelling and DAX so that measures are right and fast. And the design of the report itself: visual hierarchy, choice of charts, row-level security. Many people master the first two; the third decides whether your teams use the report or go back to Excel.

Do we need a Power BI expert or a team?

For a targeted report, an experienced consultant is enough and costs less. For a platform shared between several departments, a team brings what an individual cannot guarantee: continuity if someone leaves, peer review of the work, and the capacity to absorb a peak. We are eleven, and we designed the structure for exactly that reason.

How much does a Power BI expert cost?

It depends on the scope far more than on the number of reports. Our standard projects run from three to ten days: sources connected, semantic model, reports and training. We bill by the half hour, on the time actually spent, with the detail on every invoice. The scoping workshop that precedes the quote is free.

Do you work remotely or on site?

Both, depending on what serves the project. Most of the work happens on the data, so remotely. The moments that genuinely gain from being face to face are the scoping workshop, the arbitration of business rules and the training of your teams. We are in Saint-Priest, near Lyon, and we work in English as well as in French. We travel across the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and to French-speaking Switzerland.

2-M is a data consultancy based in Saint-Priest, on the outskirts of Lyon, France. Eleven expert consultants work on Power BI, Microsoft Fabric and the Power Platform, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, remotely across France, and in French-speaking Switzerland.
