Reporting for manufacturers

Your production figures live in one system, your sales figures in another, and your cost price is still calculated in a spreadsheet. Bringing them together is a modelling job before it is a reporting job.

Where the figures come from

The systems we connect in this sector

The ERP

Business Central, NAV, SAP or Sage: orders, purchasing, stock, cost accounting and bills of materials.

The MES or production scheduling

Production orders, time booked by work centre, quantities produced and scrapped, line stoppages with their cause.

Quality

Inspections, non-conformities, customer returns and complaints, often in a dedicated tool or in shared workbooks.

Maintenance

The CMMS: preventive and corrective work, parts consumed, equipment availability.

What you follow

The indicators these companies really watch

These are the ones we find from one project to the next. Your list will differ at the edges, and refining it is the work of the scoping workshop.

Overall equipment effectiveness

OEE, broken down into availability, performance and quality. A headline rate reassures or worries; it is the breakdown that says where to act, right down to the line pulling it down.

The scrap rate

By workshop, by line and by item. Crossed with margin, it shows the products whose profitability is decided in production rather than in negotiation.

Stoppage causes

Classified and accumulated: changeover, breakdown, setup, missing material, missing staff. The Pareto ranking rebuilds itself every week.

Actual cost price

Material, labour and overheads set against standard. The gap between the two is often the most awaited indicator, and the longest to make reliable.

Order book against capacity

Firm orders set against available capacity, by week and by line, to arbitrate priorities before the delay settles in.

Stock turnover

Materials, work in progress and finished goods, with their age. Dormant stock becomes visible, and working capital stops being a year-end surprise.

What calls for care

The points where these projects are decided

They come back almost every time in this sector. Knowing them in advance changes how the project is run, and the order in which things are done.

Frequently asked

What people ask us about this

Does the MES have to be connected to get a reliable OEE?

It depends on how fine your analysis needs to be. A monthly OEE by line can be rebuilt from the production orders in the ERP. Going down to the work centre, the shift and the stoppage cause assumes data from the MES or the supervision system. During the scoping workshop we look at what your systems already contain, before proposing another connection.

Our times are entered by hand, is that usable?

Yes, provided the report says so. Manual entry carries a margin of imprecision your teams know about, and an indicator that shows it is more useful than one that hides it. We would rather display the entry rate beside the yield than publish a smoothed figure.

Can production be followed in real time?

Technically yes, and the question deserves to be asked use by use. A shop-floor screen gains from refreshing within the hour; a board report reads very well with yesterday’s figures. Freshness changes the architecture and its cost, so it is decided where it serves.
